What the SHACMAN Electric Tractor 4×2 (512 kWh) is built for

The SHACMAN Electric Tractor 4×2 (512 kWh) is a battery-electric tractor rated for a gross combination weight of 44 t (97,000 lb), the weight class of a standard semi-trailer combination (40 – 44 t in Europe and much of Asia, 80,000 lb in the United States): regional distribution, port and terminal shuttles and line-haul between depots.

Its rated weight is close to the median of 48 t across the 16 electric semi trucks with a stated gross combination weight in our database.

Battery and charging

The SHACMAN Electric Tractor 4×2 (512 kWh) carries a 512.6 kWh battery of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, close to the median of 563 kWh across the 25 electric semi trucks in our database. LFP cells hold less energy for their weight than nickel-based ones, but last more charge cycles and tolerate heat and fast charging well, which is why most heavy electric trucks now use them.

It charges by DC fast charging and battery swapping, where a swap station exchanges the depleted pack for a charged one in about five minutes. Swapping keeps a truck working around the clock and is widespread on Chinese freight corridors, mines and construction sites, where swap stations serve whole fleets.

Power and drive

Its electric drive delivers 400 kW continuously and 600 kW at peak (805 hp); its peak power is above the median of 480 kW across the 26 electric semi trucks in our database.

Drivetrain: electric drive axle with PTO, 4×2 drive.
